Saha uygulamalarında ihtiyaçlara göre farklı sistemlerin devreye alınması gerekir. Enerji ya da üretim SCADA sistemlerinden, Yangın-Alarm sistemlerine, enerji yönetim sistemlerinden bina otomasyon sistemlerine birçok farklı uygulama aynı azmanda birçok farklı Protokol anlamına gelmektedir. Bu Protokol havuzunda tüm cihazların birbiri ile kesintisiz ve güvenilir bir şekilde haberleşmesi ancak Protokol Dönüştürücüler kullanılarak mümkün olmaktadır. Almanya menşeili Hilscher marka protokol dönüştürücüler aynı otomasyon ağında ya da farklı otomasyon ağları arasında veri transferi ve dönüşümü için kullanılır. Bu dönüştürücüler ucuz maliyet avantajı ve kolay uygulama imkanı sunar ve bu sayede seri bus, klasik Fieldbus, Ethernet, Real-Time Ethernet uygulamaları veya bunların kombinasyonları arasında rahatlıkla kullanılır. Tüm endüstriyel otomasyon projelerindeki protokolleri destekler. Hilscher marka protokol dönüştürücüler Windows tabanlı SYCON.net yazılımı ile programlanır ve yönetilir. Cihaz üzerinde kolay kullanım için LED’ler mevcuttur. Protokol dönüşümü için gerekli firmware cihaz içerisine bu yazılım ile yüklenir ve tek bir cihaz modeli ile aynı fiziksel ağdaki tüm dönüşümler kolay firmware değişikliği ile gerçekleştirilir. Örnek olarak aynı cihaz hem PROFIBUS Slave hem de PROFIBUS Master olarak programlanabilir. Desteklenen bazı protokoller: CANopen, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, POWERLINK, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, SERCOS vb.
